WHOIS: Zusätzliche Antworten?

Ich habe vor kurzem beschlossen, eine WHOIS-Abfrage auf Microsoft.com mit dem Linux-whois-Client auszuführen. Ich wurde von einer Flut von offensichtlich nicht-Microsoft.com-Domänen begrüßt, die mit der Zeichenfolge "Microsoft.com" beginnen (von denen viele ziemlich explizit sind), gefolgt von den WHOIS-Ergebnissen für die eigentliche Microsoft.com-Domäne.

Offensichtlich sind alle diese Domänen mit Ausnahme der letzten nicht im eigentlichen Besitz von Microsoft. Meine Frage ist also: Wie genau passiert das und warum bekomme ich Antworten auf eine Fülle von whois-Servern? Die Gemeinsamkeit der Antworten zeigt mir, dass die Suche irgendwo nach Microsoft.com. * Durchgeführt wurde, aber woher stammen all diese zusätzlichen Informationen?
